Plumbing fixtures need regular care due to potential sediment buildup, although you only need to set an appointment with a plumber every few years. A licensed electrician should review your electrical system every 10 years for safety checks and to recommend small upgrades. The older your plumbing and electrical components are, the more frequently they need checkups.
Also, structurally sound roofing and siding system helps keep pests at bay and your home dry and safe during storms. These home exterior elements are susceptible to weather-related damage.
Cursory assessments let you spot obvious red flags, but professional, thorough inspections matter to uncover less apparent signs of wear and get them fixed. Look for contractors that offer regular home maintenance programs to keep warranties valid, enjoy priority booking privileges and receive repair cost discounts.
Operating Doors Manually

Figure out how to operate your motorized doors when the power is out. Many of today’s exterior and interior security doors no longer require manual operation, thanks to smart home technology.
Smart doorbells and door cams, which are present in 52% of smart homes in the United States, and advanced models have smart locks that work without a physical key. A stand-alone smart lock allows you to open and close any ordinary door with a traditional deadbolt through a keypad, biometric scanner or mobile app.
Smart garage door openers support automation and remote control via a companion app or voice commands through virtual assistants, such as Alexa from Amazon.
Motorized door systems require electricity to operate remotely. Determine whether your door’s locking mechanism runs on internal batteries or draws power from the grid or a home energy storage system.
Replace the batteries of those who rely on them regularly. Find out if your doors use fail-safe or fail-secure locks. The former requires electricity to lock, while the latter needs power to unlock from the outside.

Motorized garage doors require more elbow grease to operate when there’s no power. You must unplug the door opener and ensure the door panels are in the down position before pulling the release cord to disengage the unit from the electric motor.
These safety precautions are vital, as an open garage door with springs under tension will fall abruptly when disconnected and can cause serious injury or property damage.
When lifting the door, it shouldn’t feel too heavy. Otherwise, the springs may be broken and require professional attention.
