It feels like only yesterday that Dulux announced it’s 2019 colour of the year, Spiced Honey, but here we are again looking at what colour trends lay ahead for the next year and Dulux have gone with Tranquil Dawn™. There was a lot of murmurs around the interiors industry that they would go for a green hue and they weren’t wrong!
Dulux Colour of the Year 2020 – Tranquil Dawn
As we approach a new decade (wow! So long the twenty-tens, tens, the tensies or whatever you want to call it!) a panel of experts decided to go with this soft green shade to reflect on the nation’s mood at a time when we are feeling disconnected from one another as we spend more and more time online.
I have always been a huge fan of green, preferring the darker shades of forest green and emerald (I wrote about my love for dark green in this blog post), so I was interested to see how this lighter shade could be incorporated into our homes.
Tranquil Dawn™ was selected by an expert panel of colour designers, trend forecasters, design specialists, architects and editors from around the world. As we are becoming more aware of the impact humans have on the planet, Tranquil Dawn™ was chosen for its calming and comforting qualities which we are increasingly needing in society in these times of uncertainty.
Green is always on people’s minds, with our growing concern about the planet and more and more people turning to sustainability and Veganism.
Dulux have created four different colour palettes using Tranquil Dawn™ to represent the changing sunrises that paint the sky through the seasons. As the Dulux Creative Director, Marianne Shillingford explains, “Meaning, Creativity, Care and Play capture our growing desire to experience ‘The Human Touch’ at a time when we are questioning what being human is all about”.
The Meaning Palette – A Home for Meaning
This palette is inspired by a cold winter’s dawn and its minimalist feel gives a sense of calm and contemplation. The cool colours can easily offset the darker tones in any room.
The Creativity Palette – A Home for Creativity
This palette has warm maroon and tobacco hues which are inspired by a warm autumnal day and provides a space for self-expression and storytelling. This is probably my favourite palette with it’s rich jewel tones and perfectly matched burgundies and greens.
The Care Palette – A Home for Care
With its earthy neutrals, pinks and muted greens, this is inspired by a hazy spring horizon helping us to relax and find peace. The tones are very muted and are perfect for the bedroom or bathroom where you want a bit of calm and tranquillity.
The Play Palette – A Home for Play
The horizon of a hot summer morning provides the motivation for this palette with its reds, baby blues, cream and pale greens. This colour palette could be used in a nursery or play room, or if you’re feeling really brave, use it in your living room to bring a smile on your face when you walk in the room.
How has the design and homeware industry responded to this colour of the year? I think Tranquil Dawn™ is a hugely versatile colour and can sit easily in any room or design scheme. It doesn’t have to be used on walls alone. With it being such a neutral colour, it can be used as an alternative to white on woodwork and doors and by using accessories with the same colour hue, can bring a room together beautifully.
Product Directory
Will you be using Tranquil Dawn™ in your home and what colour palette do you think you would go for? The neutral vibe of this colour makes it very easy to use in any room and as colours come and go, I think it will be in our homes for years to come.
