So here it is again, another Fall is upon us, and the weather sure let us know about it this week.

I’ve dragged my outdoor cushions and throws in from the garden and started thinking about Autumn and Fall décor trends for 2022. Autumn décor doesn’t have to be all about pumpkins, oranges, and Halloween.

Think rustic! Dried flowers, falling leaves, acorns, pumpkins, and conkers are such a statement of the autumn season and can easily be incorporated into your home.

Autumn is a time when the nights start getting darker and colder, and we look to turning our home into a cozy sanctuary, and fall décor trends do just this!

Whether you are looking to get creative and do your own décor or shopping your home to use things you already have, here are some fall decor ideas for everyone.

1. Autumn Colour Ideas

As the skies get a little moodier and grey as we head into autumn, now is a good time to use warm autumn color ideas in your home.

When we think of fall decor ideas, we automatically think of orange and rust colors. These colors are a great place to start, with many shades of orange like burnt marmalade, turmeric, and tan used as accent colors.

But, gone are the days when fall decorating meant just orange and brown. This year, we’re seeing deep burgundies, forest greens, warm terracottas, and golden mustards taking center stage.

These colors feel so much more sophisticated while still capturing that cozy fall essence we all crave.

How to Add Autumn Colors to Your Home

Unless you love the rust and burgundy colors, I wouldn’t suggest painting your rooms for Fall! Burnt orange and brown tones can sometimes be overpowering if used on the walls, but if you pick a warm and cozy color and pair it with neutral furnishings and wood furniture, it can make the room feel earthy and welcoming.

If you’re not going down the painting the wall route, try swapping out your regular throw pillows for ones in richer tones like terracotta or forest green, or add a beautiful burgundy table runner to your dining room.

In the bedroom, the key is layers! Keep your bedroom neutral but introduce rust, oranges, browns and forest greens to your bedding.

Even something as simple as switching your candles to deeper, moodier colors can make a huge difference in setting that autumn mood.

Autumn color ideas could include moss green, mustard, and coffee tones, they are the perfect shades to go with burnt orange and rust. They mimic the colors all around us in the falling leaves and nature getting ready to hibernate for the winter.

Another good way to add autumn colors to your home is by changing your artwork. Choose abstract or fall scenes with a beautiful autumnal palette.

2. Time to Cosy Up

When talking about Fall decorating with other home décor enthusiasts, there seems to be a standout reason why we all love the fall season so much. It is time to shut out the world, put our fires on in the living room, and snuggle down with slippers on and a mug of hot chocolate.

Fall is all about creating that “hygge” feeling, and nothing does that better than mixing textures. Chunky knit blankets are a firm favorite (although, not always practical around young children, I’ve found!).

Pair them with smooth velvet cushions or rough burlap combined with silky ribbons. The contrast creates visual interest while making everything feel incredibly inviting.

Our bedrooms can also have an autumnal overhaul by adding quilted throws and layers to keep us warm. Add throws with tassels and embroidered elements to add texture and pattern to the room.

Anthropologie’s beautiful use of colors always provides plenty of ideas on how to decorate your home for autumn.

3. Wreaths and Dried Flowers

Our wreath is from Balsam Hill, although they are not currently selling them.

Autumnal wreaths have always been a big thing in the US, and it wasn’t until I joined Instagram that I realised they existed! I thought wreaths were confined to Christmas, but why should Christmas have all the fun?

Wreaths now play a prominent part in Fall decor ideas, and there are plenty around, from shop-bought to DIY.

I love our Fall wreath from Balsam Hill, it comes out every September in our home, and we either hang it in the living room or on the front door. It’s a little bit extra and I’m not sure it’s totally taken off in the UK yet… if it ever will?!

If you have nowhere to hang a big wreath, small garlands are another way to add autumnal colors to your home. Place them on your mantelpiece or on shelves to give a small nod to the fall months.

4. Go Natural with Organic Elements

One of the easiest ways to follow fall decor trends is by literally bringing the outdoors in. Collect some beautiful fallen leaves, interesting branches, pinecones, and acorns during your next walk.

These natural elements are free, gorgeous, and instantly make any space feel more connected to the season.

Create a simple centerpiece with branches in a tall vase, scatter some colorful leaves along your mantel, or fill glass hurricanes with pinecones and battery-operated fairy lights. Nature provides the most beautiful fall decor ideas – you just have to look around and gather it up.

5. Warm Up Your Lighting Game

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes even more important in creating that warm, welcoming atmosphere. Ditch the harsh overhead lights and embrace softer, warmer options. String lights aren’t just for the holidays – they’re a perfect fall decor idea too.

Candles are obviously a fall staple, but try clustering different heights and sizes together for more impact. Lanterns, both indoor and outdoor varieties, add that perfect rustic charm.

And if you really want to go all out, consider adding some amber-toned bulbs to your existing lamps for an instant warm glow.

6. Pumpkins Beyond the Basic Orange

Yes, pumpkins are a classic fall decor trend, but this year I’m thinking outside the traditional orange box…

I couldn’t write a fall decor trend blog post without throwing in a few pumpkins. We’ve seen an explosion of pumpkin-related products in recent years.

The trend originates from the US when Irish settlers, who traditionally carved root vegetables at Halloween, found that pumpkins were much easier to carve.

I remember as a kid carving turnips, and it seems a bit ridiculous now. They are hard beasts to carve! You can now get all manner of pumpkin homewares from cushions to glass jars!

  • White pumpkins look incredibly elegant and work with any color scheme.
  • Blue-green heirloom varieties add unexpected color
  • Mini pumpkins in various shades can be scattered throughout your space for subtle seasonal touches.

Try painting regular pumpkins in metallics like copper or gold for a more glamorous look, or keep them natural but arrange them in interesting ways – stacked, nested in baskets, or lined up along a staircase.

You could also fill your home with pumpkin-related homeware, like pumpkin sweet jars for those trick-or-treaters, pumpkin-shaped lanterns and pumpkin baskets or trays.

7. Create Cozy Reading Nooks

Fall weather practically begs for cozy reading spots, so why not create one (or several) in your home? All you need is a comfortable chair, good lighting, and some soft textiles. Add a small side table for your coffee or tea, and you’ve got the perfect autumn retreat.

Layer a soft throw over your chair, add a textured pillow or two, and place a warm-toned lamp nearby. If you have the space, a small basket with extra blankets makes it feel even more inviting.

It’s these little thoughtful touches that make fall decorating so special.

8. Cosy Outdoor Setup

It’s always sad to say goodbye to the summer, but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your garden just yet. I wrote a blog post – 11 outdoor living and garden fall decor ideas – which centers around adding layers, fire pits, and outdoor lights to cozy up your outdoor space.

Festoon and fairy lights are a great way to light up your garden when the nights get darker. Be creative with fairy lights and wrap them around your trees or bushes, or create little table centrepieces by putting acorns and chestnuts in a glass jar and adding fairy string lights.

There are plenty of outdoor lights to choose from, with outdoor lights and lamps becoming increasingly popular. Perfect for that warm, inviting glow.

Throws, cushions, and laying down some rugs are the obvious choices when it comes to cozying up your garden. Just don’t worry too much about the rain. If it rains, bring them in! :)

9. Table Scene

As we put away our BBQs and cover up our al fresco dining spaces, it’s back to Roast dinners on a Sunday and family and friends gathering around the dining table. I love creating little seasonal tablescapes, even if they do get in the way of practical things like salt and pepper mills and dinnerware!

Candles, garlands, runners, and mini pumpkins can easily turn your dining table into a little autumnal scene and help you embrace the wet and cold days outside.

10. Dried Flowers and Plants

It seems to have died down on the pampas grass front for the time being. I remember only a year or two ago, people were going pampas grass crazy, and it was popping up everywhere.

People were cutting pampas from the middle of roundabouts and knocking on strangers’ doors asking if they could cut some of their pampas grass from their front garden!

Personally, I’ve always preferred dried flowers. There is so much more variety with faux flowers, and they are brilliant for autumn color ideas. They look good in any room!

11. Plaid and Cozy Patterns

Plaid is having a major moment this fall, and honestly, it’s about time. Whether it’s buffalo check, tartan, or a more subtle windowpane pattern, these classic designs instantly add coziness and visual interest to any space.

Start small with plaid throw pillows or a table runner, or go bigger with plaid curtains or upholstery. The key is to not go overboard – one or two plaid elements in a room is usually perfect.

12. DIY Projects with Personal Touch

Some of the most beautiful fall decor ideas come from personal DIY projects. Create leaf garlands by stringing together colorful fallen leaves, make your own autumn centerpieces using mason jars and seasonal flowers, or craft personalized pumpkins with your family’s initials.

These projects don’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Even something as simple as filling clear vases with colorful corn kernels or arranging branches in interesting containers can create stunning focal points that feel uniquely yours.

Fall Decor Trends for 2025

The beauty of fall decorating is that it doesn’t have to be perfect or expensive to be effective. Start with one or two trends that speak to you, then build from there.

Maybe this year you can focus on adding warmer lighting and some natural elements. Next year, you might experiment with different textures and colors.

I may have purchased a few of the items above myself. I hope you’ve taken something away from these fall decor ideas! I often get asked how to decorate my home for fall, and every year, my Halloween and autumn decor boxes get larger.

I love the summer, but as we move back indoors to escape the colder weather, I enjoy making my home cozy and full of vibrant autumnal colors with the latest fall decor trends.
