Many people dream of getting lost in nature, just to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. For most, the idea of going into the wild without any signal or electricity is quite scary.

If you want an off-grid adventure but still want access to amenities like electricity, it is possible, thanks to portable solar generators.

Solar Generators

Solar generators are portable devices that use solar panels to capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. They are often used as a power source for various electronic devices, especially in off-grid situations or during power outages.

They can offer you a reliable and constant source of power that you can use wherever and whenever you need it, making that off-grid adventure a little less scary! Let’s take a look at the factors that will affect your solar generator purchase for your off-road adventure.

1. Battery Type and Capacity

First, consider which types of batteries you want to include in your solar generator. You will find different battery varieties, including nickel metal hydride, sealed lead acid, lithium-ion, etc.

All options are good in terms of features and can differ based on size, weight, or expenses. You need to choose the option that best matches your energy needs.

Battery capacity determines the amount of electricity the solar generator produces and the time it needs to power your device. The storage capacity of any rechargeable battery is measured in watt-hours which indicates how long your electrical appliances take to get fully charged.

If you want to use high-powered solar generators for going off-grid that is perfect for camping, purchase a solar panel along with the generator.

However, always remember weather conditions have a great influence on its charging time. So, if you plan to have enough battery storage for extended periods, look for one with expandable battery capacity so that it can meet your power needs.

2. Charging Modes

A high-quality solar generator comes with several charging options. Along with solar panels, it may also accommodate USB ports or AC wall outlets. By using these charging options, you can easily recharge your generator in multiple ways based on your location.

As mentioned earlier, charging times can vary based on weather conditions and sun exposure when you store power from the sunlight. Sometimes, the charging times may not be too fast to charge the solar generator.

The battery of the solar generator can store power from the solar energy through a solar panel or from your home’s electrical grid through a 110V charging outlet or 12V power outlet from your vehicle.

When you are charging your power station, make sure to keep the alternator active, otherwise, the battery of your car might die.

3. Charge Controller

The charge controller of a portable solar generator is used to protect the battery from overcharging as it regulates the current and voltage coming from the panel to the battery. Overcharging can release oxygen and hydrogen gases from the electrolyte and could result in failure and explosion.

Again, the excessive discharge of power can reduce the battery’s longevity and cause premature damage to it.

The solar charge controllers switch off all the parts and reduce the current flow when fully charged. It has an HVD (high voltage disconnect) point so that it can protect the battery. It also incorporates a blocking diode to control the reserve flow of current and prevent battery charge from draining.

4. Inverter Rating

The inverters of solar generators can convert DC (Direct Current) power into usable AC (Alternating Current) power so that your devices, such as blenders, power tools, a refrigerator, etc., can use. When you are planning to power your high-energy devices, opt for choosing a solar generator that has high power output inverter.

Also, check the continuous output rating of your inverter and ensure that it will be able to meet your growing power requirements. Inverter rating simply indicates a number that tells you what is the maximum watt amount that you can capture from the generator.  The most effective ratio of watt-hours and inverter rating is 1.5:1. That means a battery of 1500-watt-hour is for a 1000-watt inverter.

For example, when you plan to charge a number of smartphones using a solar panel, a 200Wh generator will work well. But if you wish to power the coffee machine during a power outage, that size probably would not work.

5. Power Output and Capacity

When purchasing a solar generator, you need to consider its power output. Check whether the generator can provide adequate power to run larger pieces of equipment or just small appliances.

A higher wattage output indicates a higher capacity of a generator. You can usually find the wattage output information in its product description.

Before that, you need to find out the amount of power you need at a given time. To make things easier, make a list of devices and appliances that you want to get connected to the generator.

Figure out the number of devices that can be connected at a time and how long you need to run the appliances or get them charged. Also, calculate what will be the total wattage of your device.

Understanding these will give you a clear insight into the minimum power capacity to match your needs.

6. Solar Panel Efficiency

The efficiency of a solar panel determines the amount of energy the solar panel can store from the sun. It also indicates how quickly solar panels can convert sunlight into power. A more efficient solar panel can produce more electricity in a short period of time which is a great option for areas with limited sun exposure.

20% or higher efficiency is better. So, to ensure maximum energy storage, choose a solar generator that comes with a highly efficient solar panel.

Apart from off-grid adventures, if you install a solar panel at home, it will save energy, reduce your utility expenses, and become one of the energy-efficient options for your home.

7. Portability

Portability is also important to consider if you are always on the move and plan to use the solar generator on the go. Look for options that are light and small enough to carry from one place to another and also easy to lift into a vehicle.

Some portable generators may have wheels and handles. These features also make the generator ideal for easy transportation so the weight is not such an issue.

8. Installation

Always check the installation requirements before purchasing a solar generator. The best place to find the installation information is in its product description. Read it carefully to understand whether you can install the solar generator yourself or need help from a professional.

Some solar generators may have complex installation systems that may be difficult to set up, needing specific knowledge and expertise to install correctly.

9. Durability

Make sure to choose a solar powered generator that is highly durable. For ensuring durability, you can opt for options that are built with solid construction materials such as steel or aluminum.

Look for options that come with solid built-in protection against dirt, dust, or spills which will help prolong its lifespan, and always select a solar generator that is best suited for the environment you will be using it in.

10. Safety

Safety should always be a top priority! Make sure to choose a solar generator with all the necessary safety features to protect you against short-circuiting or any other accidents. Solar panels produce electricity so they can cause a fire if not properly installed and maintained.

11. Compatibility

Before purchasing any solar generator, ensure that all your electrical devices are compatible with the generator. Most generators have different input ports for charging electrical devices, including laptops, phones, and other auxiliary ports.

Before making your final purchase decision, you need to double-check whether your chosen option has all types of ports you will need. With so many different charging elements and ports available on our many devices, you don’t want to be caught short when you realize you can’t charge your electrical devices!

12. Unique Features

With so many options and varieties available in the market, it can be difficult to find the best one. When you are going to select a new product, you may find that all the top brands offer more or less the same features. This can overwhelm you when you need to pick one between two similar products.

In this situation, you can look at each brand’s distinctive features or product offerings, which will eventually help you make the best decision.

For example – some solar powered generators may offer you an integrated PWM chip, whereas others may offer an MPPT charge controller that can charge your devices faster and increase the solar energy yields.

Other additional features, such as an integrated flashlight, multiple USB outputs having quick charging capacity, integrated fuses, BMS protection, etc., can also affect your decision. These are all unique features that can help you weigh your options in terms of your needs.

Choosing the perfect solar generator for all your off-grid adventures can help keep your cameras, GPS, and cooking equipment charged.

A high-quality and reliable solar generator will ensure a constant and steady source of power supply ensuring an enjoyable and seamless experience.
