Americans move roughly every five years or 11.7 times during the course of their lifetime. If you are like the average American, keeping track of all the places you have lived can be tricky, if not nearly impossible (unless you are super organized).

However, knowing your address history has benefits. It can help confirm your identity, associations, credibility, and even financial standing.

Often, lenders run address checks to review creditworthiness when approving loans and mortgages. Landlords rely on them for identity verifications during tenant screening, and employers use them as part of background checks to assess potential risks (especially those relating to a criminal history).

Past addresses can come in handy in locating legal assets and tracing people you were associated with, too. When you know your previous addresses, it is also easy to spot early signs of identity theft (say, if an unfamiliar address gets linked to your name).

But what’s the most effective way to dig up your previous address history? The answer depends on several factors, including the type of details documented, shared, and available online.

The good news is, there are multiple platforms, contacts, and documents that could lead you to useful information.

Here’s what we suggest you do when you need to find your past whereabouts.

Look Up Your Address on Nuwber

Old addresses can appear in a variety of public records, such as census data, voter registration lists, birth certificates, property records, business licenses, tax files, and court documents. Retrieving all these one by one can be exhausting, not to mention time-consuming.

But there’s an easier way to filter what you need from public records—a reverse search on Nuwber. This people search engine collects useful data about individuals from verified public sources (state databases, etc.) and organizes what it gathers into people profiles.

These profiles typically contain address histories with estimated timelines of residence (this is in addition to lots of other information, like a person’s social media profiles, relatives, assets, and criminal records).

You can access yours by looking up your current address on the platform. Searching for your name, phone number, or email could also help dig up your old addresses.

Run a Name Search on Google

Google’s search engine is an excellent tool for discovering useful address-related information online. It can find content published by various organizations and individuals, covering extensive resources like blogs, social media, and public directories.

However, unlike Nuwber, Google won’t filter what you need into a cohesive report. Instead, it will provide a list of web pages with links and excerpts that are relevant to your search query.

But it is still invaluable for screening online content (particularly from unofficial sources) and finding additional details related to past addresses and the time you lived there.

What’s the best way to use Google to unearth your address history? Start with [full name]+address. If you can recall any cities, suburbs, streets, or building names of places you stayed during different periods of your life, you can add them too as keywords to refine the results.

Reach Out to Useful Contacts

Do you still have details of prior landlords? Then, why not contact them and request the addresses of the relevant properties?

In fact, there could be many others who could help you identify the missing pieces of the puzzle. All you need to do is figure out who you knew while staying at different places and note down their names and contact information.

If you are unsure of their phone numbers, run their names through Nuwber’s people directory to get the latest details.

Your list of old contacts may include family members, ex-boyfriends or girlfriends, housemates, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Reach out to each person and see what they remember.

Hopefully, they could help jog your memory and get you at least a partial address and an indication of the exact period you were staying there.

Check Old Documents

There may be a ton of documents with previous addresses and dates that could guide you in tracing your address history. These can range from credit reports, utility bills, bank statements, and tax returns to medical reports, insurance claims, and lease agreements.

If you have filed these for future reference, it would be worth going through old folders and boxes tucked away in the basement, garage, or wherever you keep stuff from your past.

Let’s say you couldn’t find anything useful. Then, try contacting the relevant organizations to check whether they can provide copies.

For instance, you may request your free credit report from one of the three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion) or contact health service providers and ask for old medical billing records.

Review Online Accounts

Sometimes, the countless online accounts you have created over time could have current and past addresses. Think about long-forgotten subscriptions, memberships, and E-commerce profiles from years back.

If you haven’t used them for a while, chances are you haven’t updated your address on them, either. So, by logging in, you might be able to find old addresses.

Accounts you are actively using right now can contain clues to your past residences, too. (However, we are talking about profiles you have had for several years, not new ones.)

For example, most online retailers carry records of their customers’ historical purchase details, including old invoices. These could indicate addresses used for deliveries and billing.

Your email inbox can also have old correspondence with references to your home addresses.

Easy Ways to Find a Previous Address

Past addresses can be a valuable source of information for verifying a person’s identity, reviewing their creditworthiness, assessing potential risks, and discovering assets and people associated with them.

Naturally, checking your address history is a smart idea before applying for a mortgage, looking for a job, hunting for a rental, or putting yourself through a similar circumstance where your past whereabouts could throw a spanner in the works.

If you find an inaccurate address during your search, make sure you get it rectified immediately. This is important for minimizing the risks associated with potential identity theft.
