44 Ideas for MidJourney Interior Design Prompts – How to Create Beautiful Images

I have been using MidJourney to create images for over a year now and I am constantly blown away by the beautiful imagery it produces and how much inspiration it brings. But why did I start using this powerful AI tool?

When I started my blog, it was to document our home renovations, and over time, I began to talk about decorating ideas, color, and how to use interior design in the home. I couldn’t keep redecorating my home for the sake of my blog and Instagram, it was unsustainable and I wanted to be more mindful about how I approached design projects.

I started asking people if I could use their imagery in my blog, with credit, but often people did not get back to me or wanted to be paid, which was entirely understandable.

Unfortunately, I just didn’t have the budget that huge publications have, so I found myself using stock images or branded images from affiliate websites to help visualize my design ideas.

However, doing this was a bit, well, crap, resulting in me writing blogs I wasn’t entirely happy with. Until I came across an influential SEO expert talking about MidJourney on Twitter with examples, and I was instantly impressed.

I originally signed up for a free MidJourney account (which, due to the huge uptake, is no longer available) and was hooked. I would say that MidJourney is now my most used app on my PC and I have been researching how to use it to its best ability ever since.

It’s all in the MidJourney prompts!

If you haven’t used MidJourney before, check out my MidJourney for Beginners post so you can get a feel for this AI design app. I get a lot of people messaging and emailing me about MidJourney and what kind of prompts for interior design I use, and I can honestly say, it is easier than it looks!

Once you’ve got your head around joining the Discord server and creating an account, the rest is pretty straightforward. Creating compelling images starts with crafting effective MidJourney interior design prompts.

Here are some key elements to consider when crafting prompts for interior design:

1. Start With an Idea

Interior design prompts can easily create beautiful images!

Do you already have a design in mind that you want to create? Explain this room to MidJourney as if you’re telling a friend; what colors are the walls? What style is it? I find the best way to start an image is by typing in a really simple command such as – a living room with a green velvet sofa and wood burner – and see what it produces.

Sometimes, it hits the nail on the head straight away and I absolutely love the image. Other times, it is far off the mark, so I start honing in on what I like and become a little more descriptive.

If you find it hard to visualize and explain what it is you are trying to achieve (my Husband has complete visual blindness, I try and explain to him what I’m trying to do to a room and he just can’t see it without pictures or examples), find an image you love from magazines, Pinterest or social media and type in what you see.

This is our bedroom, with soft pink walls and furnishings, a dark green button-back bed, and a green and pink Persian rug. I took this image and typed in the interior design prompt –

“a blush pink bedroom with paneling, a green button back velvet bed with blush pink quilted throw and a green and pink persian rug on the floor” and it produced this –

It’s a pretty good start! You can be more descriptive in your MidJourney prompts, tweaking the color description and adding more furniture details, until you get the desired result.

2. Specify the Room Type

The most important thing is to clearly define the room you want to design, such as a living room, bedroom, kitchen, or office. This helps the AI to focus on the appropriate elements for that space.

  1. Modern Home Office: “Design a modern home office with a sleek white desk, an ergonomic chair, and built-in shelving. Use a neutral color palette with pops of color in the decor and ensure plenty of natural light.”
  2. Vintage Home Office: “Create a vintage home office with a wooden roll-top desk, a leather armchair, and classic bookshelves. Use warm, rich colors and incorporate vintage decor elements like an antique lamp and old-fashioned globe.”

3. Define the Style

As we have seen above, each MidJourney prompt has defined the style you are trying to achieve for the rooms. Specify the style you want to achieve when crafting prompts for interior design, such as modern, rustic, industrial, or Scandinavian.

Example: “Design a Scandinavian bedroom with natural wood elements and a cozy atmosphere.”

4. Mention Key Elements

Include important furniture, fixtures, and decor items in your interior design prompt. Be specific about what you want to see in the design. For example; “Design a rustic kitchen with exposed brick walls, wooden cabinets, and a large farmhouse sink.”

5. Color Palette

Getting the color palette right is the hardest thing when it comes to designing with MidJourney. Unfortunately, you cannot use a hex or Pantone color, so it is never exact. This can be problematic when you love a specific paint color, but finding out how to describe it to MidJourney can be tricky.

However, there are ways you can get a good color match by identifying the color. I use imagecolorpicker.com which lets you upload an image and it will pick out the key colors and give you the Hex and color name.

For example, I uploaded this bedroom image and it identified the green bed as the color “Goblin”.

I then typed in this interior design prompt “a sofa with the color green goblin fabric” and this is what it produced.

So it’s a pretty good match! I do find that MidJourney is pretty good at recognizing big brands such as Benjamin Moore or Farrow & Ball, so you could start by typing in “a living room painted in Benjamin Moore Gentleman’s Gray with a grey sofa“, it should recognize the hue, as below.

I never worry too much about getting the exact color. As you probably know by looking at paint images on brand websites, the shade can vary hugely depending on the light, where the paint is, and who took the photo.

All my MidJourney images are for inspiration purposes only, they give you a feel of how colors and furniture work together in a room and you should always buy a tester and test it yourself in your home before committing.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve loved a color I’ve seen on Instagram, ordered the paint and it looks completely different on my walls!

6. Lighting and Ambiance

If you have a particular room in mind and know the lighting in the room, such as if it has huge windows, or is a dark room, make sure you include this in your MidJourney prompt.

This can help you choose colors that work with the ambiance of a room, for example; “Design a cozy reading nook with warm lighting and comfortable seating.”

7. Using Commands to Create the Right-Sized Images

Finally, you need to let MidJourney what size image you want it to produce. It will default to a square image, but you can use the command –ar (aspect ratio), to specify the size.

I generally use –ar 2:3 for all images as these are the best sizes for my blog and Pinterest. But you can also use –ar 3:2 for a landscape image, –ar 9:16 for an image for your social media videos, and –ar 16:9 for YouTube videos.

Tips for Creating Beautiful Images with MidJourney Prompts

To maximize the potential of MidJourney and create stunning interior design images, consider the following tips before writing your interior design prompts:

  • Experiment with Different MidJourney Prompts: Don’t be afraid to try various prompts and tweak them to see how the AI responds. This experimentation can lead to unexpected and delightful results.
  • Use Descriptive Language: Be as detailed and descriptive as possible in your MidJourney prompts to guide the AI effectively. I sometimes find that just including a comma, or rearranging the sentence can have a hugely different result. For reasons unknown, MidJourney will hone in on particular words so you may not get the result you want and by moving some words around, it’ll choose another word to prioritize.
  • Incorporate Trends: Stay updated with the latest interior design trends and incorporate them into your prompts to create contemporary and stylish designs.
  • Review and Refine: Review the generated images and refine your interior design prompts if necessary. Iteration is key to achieving the desired outcome.
  • Combine Elements: Mix and match different styles, colors, and features to create unique and personalized designs.
