As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to decking the halls and putting up the Christmas tree. While the traditional red and green color scheme has its charm and has been a firm favorite in our household for many years, there’s a growing trend that’s gaining popularity: the neutral Christmas tree.

This delightful and refreshing twist on holiday decor embraces the beauty of nature and the tranquility of earthy tones and is an understated elegant tree with a more subdued approach. Inspired by the serenity of woodlands and the raw beauty of nature, a neutral Christmas tree offers a peaceful and grounding alternative to traditional holiday decor.

The Appeal of a Neutral Christmas Tree

Neutral Christmas trees have been making waves in recent years and for a good reason. They offer a sense of calm and sophistication while maintaining the festive spirit of the season. Here are a few reasons why you might consider going neutral with your holiday decor this year:

  1. Timeless Elegance – Neutral colors, such as whites, creams, beiges, and soft greens, never go out of style. Opting for a neutral Christmas tree ensures that your decor will remain elegant and chic year after year. It’s a timeless choice that can effortlessly blend with various interior design styles.
  2. Versatile Canvas – A neutral backdrop provides a versatile canvas for your holiday decor. Whether you want to go for a rustic, traditional, or contemporary look, a neutral tree can adapt to your style. You can easily change up your ornaments and accessories to suit your evolving tastes.
  3. Natural Beauty – Nature-inspired decor has a unique appeal. A neutral Christmas tree evokes the serene beauty of the outdoors, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It’s the perfect choice for those who love spending time in nature or want to bring a touch of the outdoors inside during the winter months.
  4. Peaceful Ambiance – The holiday season can sometimes be hectic, but a neutral Christmas tree can help create a peaceful ambiance in your home. The soft, muted colors promote relaxation and a sense of tranquility, allowing you and your guests to truly savor the holiday spirit.

How to Create a Neutral Christmas Tree

Always try and use what you already have when creating neutral Christmas decor. The beauty of a nature-inspired Christmas tree is that you can DIY many decor items, saving money and being more eco-friendly.

One of my favorite Christmas decor items in our home is a twig Christmas tree that comes out every year, perfect if you do not have a lot of room in your home. Here is a step-by-step guide to creating a beautiful neutral Christmas tree;

1. Start with the Right Tree

Choosing the right tree is essential for achieving the desired look. The foundation of your woodland-inspired Christmas tree is, of course, the tree itself. Whether you opt for a real pine tree or a high-quality artificial one, the key is to choose a tree that looks lush and full.

Consider the height and shape that best fit your space. A tree with a more natural, less uniform shape can enhance the woodland theme.

2. Choose Earthy Ornaments

For a nature-inspired theme, opt for ornaments in earthy tones and materials. Focus on materials like wooden ornaments, pinecones, burlap ribbons, jute, and matte-finished baubles in shades of white, beige, brown, and soft green. These elements will give your tree a rustic and woodland feel.

Wooden snowflakes, woodland elements like mushrooms and toadstools, and baubles made out of wicker also create a beautiful nature-inspired Christmas tree. DIY enthusiasts can even create their own ornaments using natural materials like acorns, dried orange slices, and cinnamon sticks.

3. Incorporate Natural Elements

Embrace the beauty of nature by incorporating natural elements into your decor. Add sprigs of faux greenery, such as eucalyptus, holly, and cedar, to your tree. You can also hang delicate bird ornaments or miniature animal figurines to evoke a woodland atmosphere.

4. Play with Textures

Pine cones, berries, metallic baubles, and wooden beads all add to the texture of the tree

Textures add depth to your neutral tree. Layer in elements like faux fur tree skirts for a touch of luxury, or add a rustic charm with a wicker skirt. Incorporate garlands made of natural elements like twine or wood beads. These textures not only enhance the tree but also engage the sense of touch, making your tree a more immersive experience.

Mix in some fuzzy or knitted ornaments, velvet ribbons, and metallic accents in muted tones. If your tree feels a little sparse in areas, fill it with eucalyptus stems. This layering of textures will make your tree feel cozy and inviting.

5. Lighting and Subtle Sparkle

While a neutral tree might eschew the bright colors of traditional Christmas lights, it doesn’t mean it should lack sparkle. Use warm white LED lights to create a cozy glow and add a few carefully placed metallic or glass ornaments that can catch the light and give your tree a subtle shimmer without overwhelming the neutral palette.

We went for cluster lights this year and I am hugely impressed with them. I find that normal lights can often look too uniform, whereas cluster lights really do fill your tree up with sparkle. I would also suggest trying to get remote control LED Lights where you can. The plug sockets in a living room are often hard to get to, so you are constantly crawling under the tree trying to turn off your lights!

Fairy lights or string lights also work for a magical touch. The gentle glow of the lights against the neutral backdrop will make your tree truly enchanting.

6. Personalize with Family Keepsakes

While sticking to a neutral theme, don’t hesitate to include family keepsakes and ornaments with sentimental value. These personal touches add warmth and character to your tree, whether they are angels made by your kids, or baubles passed down through generations.

7. Top it Off

The tree topper is the crowning glory of your Christmas tree. For a woodland-inspired tree, opt for a simple star or angel made from natural materials, or consider a unique topper like a nest with bird figurines or a large wooden snowflake.

Additional Decorating Ideas

If you want to take your neutral Christmas tree to the next level, consider these additional decorating ideas:

  • Create a Woodland Table Setting: Extend the woodland theme beyond the tree by decorating your dining table with natural elements like pinecones, greenery, and wooden accents. Neutral table linens and rustic dinnerware can complement the look.
  • Natural Wreaths: Create or purchase wreaths made from natural materials like twigs, dried flowers, and eucalyptus. These can be hung on doors, windows, or walls to add a touch of nature-inspired elegance.
  • Craft DIY Ornaments: Engage in simple paper and wood crafts, like paper snowflakes or wooden bead ornaments. These can be fun family activities and add a personal touch to your decor.
  • Textured Stockings: Opt for stockings made from natural fibers like wool, burlap, or linen. These can be hung on the fireplace mantel for a traditional yet neutral holiday look.
  • Build a Cozy Reading Nook: Transform a corner of your home into a cozy reading nook with neutral-colored pillows, blankets, and string lights. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa and a good book by the glow of your neutral Christmas tree.
  • Neutral Outdoor Decor: Extend the neutral theme outside with simple wreaths, white string lights, and wooden outdoor ornaments.
