From Rustic to Maximalism: Outdoor Living Styles to Match Your Home

Your outdoor space has so much potential – it’s like having a whole extra room that just happens to be under the sky. But here’s the thing that trips up a lot of people: they’ll spend months perfecting their indoor decor and then just throw some random patio furniture outside and call it done.
One of the simplest ways to achieve a natural transition from your home to outdoors is to create a similar design style between your outdoor space and the indoor living space.
Outdoor Living Styles
To recreate your interior’s style, you need to get a good idea of the design elements your home features. If you enjoy being surrounded by chaos, vibrant colors, and eclectic knick-knacks, you might be hosting a maximalist or bohemian style.
If you prefer a clean and organized touch, there’s a good chance you’re enjoying some hints of modern minimalism.
Learning about the various design styles available and how they can be incorporated outdoors can provide an excellent foundation for a well-designed and intentional space.
Rustic Revival

More outdoor spaces are tapping into the traditional charm of rustic styles. Just like farmhouse-style ranches, exposed and distressed natural materials, such as wood, metal, and stone, serve as an excellent foundation for outdoor flower beds, patio furniture, and decks.
Repurposed or reclaimed planters also add a unique, lived-in appeal to rustic gardens.
To mimic the roots of the farmhouse style, more homeowners are adding hobby or urban farms to their outdoor spaces, starting with small chicken coops or edible herb gardens.
Traditional-style barns can also serve as a source of thematic storage space. Pole barns present a cost-effective option, especially when you opt for local builders who can customize for affordable sizes and materials.
Begin by searching online for terms such as “pole barn builder near me” or “local barn construction” to compare quotes. At its core, rustic outdoor spaces utilize a raw and authentic touch to a patio or backyard.
Boho Chic

If you love artistic and eclectic designs in your home, you’ll likely love a boho chic patio. “Boho” is short for bohemian, representing the creative and free-spirited bohemian movements (or “hippie” movements). Chic blends a touch of elegance and refinement into the style, creating an organized yet artistic touch for your backyard.
Think rattan patio furniture or a woven hanging chair. Woven hanging plant containers, comfortable lounging spaces, throw blankets, and string lights all fall under the boho chic spectrum.
An eclectic rug on the porch or a stylish wind chime can nicely complement the look. For an extra creative touch, consider making your own plant pots or garden sculptures.
Modern Minimalism

Modern outdoor spaces prioritize clean lines, smooth surfaces, and sleek appearances. New construction homes often enjoy these features, so you may want your outdoor space to follow suit.
In the realm of contemporary minimalism, less is indeed more. These spaces typically opt for a neutral color palette of two to three colors, often including white, gray, and black.
Thematic cohesion is the goal here. Similar patterns, textures, and colors create a clean and cool appearance, such as;
- A smooth, symmetrical fire pit over the traditional type.
- Square couches and chairs, centered by a similarly symmetrical coffee table of the same color and style.
- Lighting is subtle and uniform, as is the choice of plants and pottery.
- Most materials in modern styles include sanded wood, concrete, and metal.
If vibrant colors, clutter, and unique styles are your taste, minimalism may not be for you.
Bold Maximalism

At the opposite end of the style spectrum from minimalism lies maximalism. Instead of clean lines and limited decor, these styles go all out in terms of color, texture, and decor.
- Vibrant accents or clashing colors are preferred.
- Different styles of furniture, including shapes, colors, and materials, are welcome in these spaces.
- Cluttered flowerbeds and a variety of plants and pots decorate outdoor spaces.
- Clashes, mismatches, and eclectic styles are intentional preferences.
- Fun outdoor trinket shelves, a wide array of windchimes, and multiple outdoor fountains can easily recreate this style.

Boho chic styles often utilize maximalist touches to appeal to the eclectic and free-spirited theme. If your home is covered in decor, vibrant colors, and eccentric furniture, maximalism is likely an excellent choice for your outdoor space as well.
Cottagecore

Similar to the rustic style, cottagecore aesthetics offer a lighter, more crafty version, featuring fewer farmhouse elements and more rural cottage elements. Both styles overlap in many categories, including the use of natural materials, eco-friendly features, and sustainable living practices.
Cottagecore encompasses a range of decorative styles that center on crafting, florals, and romanticized elements that some rustic styles may lack.
An English rose garden with a comfortable patio bistro dining area, perfect for enjoying tea, can create a beautiful cottagecore-style outdoor space, complete with rattan furniture and woven tablecloths.

Vegetable gardens, a small shed or summerhouse, pergolas, gravel paths and lots of plants in rattan baskets all give a nod to cottagecore garden styles.
Similar to boho chic styles, string lights are perfect here. If you decorate your home in a similar style to a rural cottage in the countryside, your outdoor space can easily complement this aesthetic.
Do You Know Your Outdoor Living Style?

When it comes to decorating your outdoor space, you have numerous options to choose from. While you don’t have to adhere to a single design style, selecting a central aesthetic or look can help you create a comfortable and cohesive appearance in your backyard.
If you prefer a modern touch with simplicity and clean lines, modern minimalism might be the right choice. If you opt for an eco-friendly style that prioritizes rural charm and features exposed natural materials, you may be drawn to rustic or cottagecore styles.
If you enjoy being surrounded by art, eclectic trinkets, and comfortable furniture, your outdoor space might enjoy touches of boho chic or maximalist approaches.
