Addressing pockets of heat loss is key to achieving energy efficiency. Most homeowners know the usual suspects — cracked walls, floor gaps, structurally unsound window frames, and uninsulated panes.

However, focusing on significant energy leakage sources is only half the job. Identifying and fixing lesser-known ones can be equally important!

How to Address Leaking Energy in Your Home

Pay attention to these six commonly overlooked areas to stay comfortable during the hottest and coldest months while keeping your utility bills manageable.

1. Masonry

Brick, stone, concrete, rammed earth and other similar construction materials trap air and insulate heat. Although masonry lasts for decades, mortar ages more quickly. Degraded mortar makes masonry construction less airtight.

Moreover, masonry materials are porous, despite what their solid surfaces would suggest. Their tiny pores can allow convection, which is heat transfer through the air.

Poorly maintained brick, stone, and concrete can crack, making problem areas drafty.

The junctions between masonry units and other materials notoriously leak heat. For instance, caulk seals the gap between windowsills and wall openings, and while it can last up to 20 years, some types have shorter lifespans.

2. Chimney

The stack effect naturally ventilates your house due to the differences in air densities and pressure imbalances inside.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Warm air moves up because it’s light.
  2. Rising warm air depressurizes lower house areas.
  3. Your home draws cold air near the ground to correct the pressure imbalance.
  4. The cold air stays close to the floor because it’s denser than warm air.
  5. Stacks of cold air further push warm air up.
  6. Warm air finds a way outside the house and exits.

This phenomenon also goes by the chimney effect metaphorically because the chimney vents out the draft of smoke and hot gases the fireplace produces.

During winter, your chimney can leak heated air when your fireplace has a malfunctioning damper or doesn’t have one.

Furthermore, chimneys go through various house features — including drywall, insulation, and the roof. Improperly sealed junctions leak heat.

You also face a double whammy when your chimney is masonry constructed and you neglect its maintenance. Getting your chimney regularly serviced alleviates wear and tear, averts indoor smoke buildup, and prevents fires.

3. Wall Studs

These framing components are thermal bridges, allowing heat to move from the inside of the house to the outside. Metal studs are worse than their wood counterparts, but both materials are prolific heat conductors.

Sustainable construction concepts — like solid panel structures — aim to reduce thermal bridging without sacrificing structural integrity in modern home designs. However, continuous insulation is the most viable option for existing houses to minimize heat transfer through wall studs.

4. Uninsulated Garage Doors

An attached garage merits insulation, even when it’s not climate-controlled. Keeping your garage naturally cooler than the outside eases the strain on your air conditioner to maintain the adjacent rooms’ desired comfort levels.

Research shows that replacing an outdated garage door with an energy-efficient model can minimize heat loss by up to 71%, making the space 10 to 20 degrees cooler on a hot day in places like Florida.

Energy-efficient garage doors have built-in polystyrene or polyurethane insulation. These materials have different R-values, but either is enough to keep your garage from becoming a furnace during the warmest months.

5. Damaged Ductwork

Air ducts have seams, causing them to leak considerable amounts of heated or chilled air when compromised.

Sections of ductwork can loosen, crack, or become disconnected over time for various reasons. Water intrusion can cause steel ductwork to rust — whether galvanized or not. Weather damage can dislodge, dent, or pierce through ducts. Stepping on them can crush the material, rendering the affected area structurally unsound.

Isolated damage can be challenging to discover because ducts hide within wall cavities. You need a keen sense of hearing to notice whistling, hissing, or roaring sounds, indicating air leakage.

Minor air leakage through the ductwork may move the dial enough to inflate your utility bills. Still, you can’t definitively determine your air ducts are shot since many other factors could cause your energy costs to skyrocket.

Scheduling regular duct cleaning can help you discover and confirm leaks. Technicians use cameras to navigate your ductwork’s labyrinth of air passages, documenting gaps and pinpointing their locations.

6. Electrical Sockets

Gaps around electrical outlets leak heated or cooled air and let drafts from unconditioned rooms into living spaces. Quantifying how much heat you lose through them is challenging, but minor leaks add up over time.

Fortunately, foam gasket insulation pads stop air leaks around electrical sockets and switches. They’re precut to fit snugly around standard sizes of cover plates.

You don’t need an electrician for this task. However, consider using one when you don’t know where to find your fuse box or which circuit breakers to touch for safety reasons.
