Where the Hot Water Cylinder Goes

Combi boilers heat water on demand and take up no real storage space. Heat pumps work differently. They pair with a hot water cylinder, which is typically around 1.5 to 1.8 metres tall and roughly 500mm in diameter. That cylinder needs a permanent home, and where you put it has design consequences.

Airing cupboards are the most common location, but only if there’s enough space and the existing one isn’t already serving a different purpose. Utility rooms and integrated garages work well, particularly for homes that already have generous downstairs storage. Loft spaces are an option, though they need careful insulation and access planning.
