Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog – Paint Review and Palettes

Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog is one of the most popular colors when I post color palettes on my Facebook page. Either images that I post with the color get huge interaction, or if I post questions about color, Evergreen Fog often pops up as a favorite paint choice.

Evergreen Fog became especially popular after being a Color of the Year (2022), and unlike many trendy colors, it’s still going strong in 2025!

I absolutely love this color, it is definitely one of my go-tos, with a similar shade in our living room and bathroom. If you’ve been on the hunt for a paint color that feels fresh, calming, and just a little bit trendy without being too much, Evergreen Fog is the way to go.

What Exactly IS Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog?

So what’s the deal? Why is everyone still swooning over this soft, misty green? Let’s take a look at why Evergreen Fog has become such a fan favorite and how you can use it in your own home.

What Color Is Evergreen Fog, Really?

Describing Evergreen Fog isn’t as straightforward as saying “it’s green.” It’s actually a gray-green with just enough depth to feel modern but still cozy. It’s not overly sage, not too minty, and not the dark hunter green we’ve been seeing everywhere.

Think of it as the perfect in-between: earthy and grounded but still light enough to feel airy. Some people even call it a “neutral green” because it plays so nicely with other colors.

Evergreen Fog leans ever-so-slightly warm but never yellow, and it doesn’t go blue or minty either. That’s what makes it so versatile—it’s balanced.

Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog LRV

Its LRV is 30, which means it’s a medium-depth color. It reflects enough light to keep a room from feeling like a cave but has enough pigment to hold its own on cabinetry, accent walls, or exteriors.

LRV is measured from 0 – 100, with 0 being pure black, so it’s more towards the darker end.

How Evergreen Fog Behaves in Different Lighting Conditions

One of the biggest things to remember about paint colors, especially muted, complex ones like Evergreen Fog, is that they don’t look the same in every room. Light can totally change the way this shade reads, which is why those peel-and-stick samples are a lifesaver.

North-Facing Rooms

This image shows how dark Evergreen Fog can be in north facing rooms

These rooms get cooler, bluer light. In this kind of space, Evergreen Fog leans a little grayer and more subdued. It still shows its green undertone, but it’s softer and more muted—perfect if you want a calm, understated vibe.

South-Facing Rooms

With warm, golden light streaming in, Evergreen Fog looks warmer and more obviously green. You’ll see its earthy, sage-like qualities come through, which makes it feel cozier and more welcoming.

East-Facing Rooms

Morning light is cool and crisp, so Evergreen Fog may look a bit cooler and grayer early in the day. As the sun moves, it shifts to a warmer green, giving you a nice balance throughout the day.

West-Facing Rooms

In the afternoon and evening, west-facing rooms are drenched in warm, orangey light. This can make Evergreen Fog look richer and greener, almost like a soft moss tone.

Low-Light or Windowless Rooms

Because its LRV is 30 (a mid-depth shade), Evergreen Fog can feel a bit heavier in darker spaces. In these spots, it may lose some of its green and lean more toward gray. That’s not a bad thing, it just depends on the mood you’re going for.

Bottom line: Evergreen Fog is a shapeshifter. In bright, warm rooms, it feels like a soft, earthy green. In cooler or darker spaces, it takes on a more muted, gray-green personality.

Neither version is “wrong”—it just depends on your lighting and the mood you want in the room.

The Best Rooms for Evergreen Fog

Now for the fun part: imagining Evergreen Fog in different rooms.

Living Room

Paint your living room walls in Evergreen Fog and instantly get that cozy yet modern vibe. The muted green-gray tones create a sense of calm without making the room feel flat or boring. It’s just colorful enough to be interesting, but neutral enough to work with almost any décor.

Styling Evergreen Fog in the Living Room

  • Accents: Brass and matte black hardware pop against this color, while woven baskets, greenery, and natural materials emphasize its earthy side.
  • Trim & Ceilings: Crisp white trim (like Sherwin-Williams Pure White) gives a clean contrast, while off-whites (like Alabaster) create a softer, cozier look. For a bold twist, pair it with deep charcoal or even black interior doors.
  • Furniture Pairings: Light or natural wood tones warm up Evergreen Fog, while leather sofas (caramel, cognac, or deep brown) look especially rich against it. For modern interiors, pair it with neutral upholstery—gray, cream, or beige—and accent with bold colors like mustard or navy.
  • Textiles: Layer in cozy textures like linen curtains, chunky knit throws, patterned rugs, and lots of pillows. Because Evergreen Fog is so calm, it gives you the freedom to play with patterns and fabrics.

Kitchen Walls

Kitchens are often called the heart of the home, so why not give yours a backdrop that feels both welcoming and stylish? Painting your kitchen walls in Evergreen Fog is a fantastic way to bring warmth and personality into a space that can sometimes lean a little too “all white and sterile.”

Because Evergreen Fog is a muted gray-green, it adds just the right amount of color without overwhelming the room. It pairs beautifully with crisp white trim, marble or quartz counters, and even subway tile backsplashes.

If your kitchen leans more modern farmhouse, pair it with warm butcher block counters and black hardware. If you’re more into a sleek, contemporary style, it also looks gorgeous alongside stainless steel appliances and light gray cabinetry.

Open wood shelving, woven barstools, or even copper pots hung on display can highlight the earthy tones in Evergreen Fog.

Kitchen Cabinets

This is one of my favorite uses. Evergreen Fog cabinets with brushed brass or matte black hardware = chef’s kiss.

  • Add white quartz counters and a white backsplash, and you’ve got a look that feels fresh but timeless.
  • For a bolder look, try patterned tile with touches of green or gold.
  • Keep the wall colors light and neutral to let the cabinets shine. Whites, creams, or warm beiges are perfect.
  • Light wood floors make the room feel airy and grounded, whereas darker-stained wood creates a rich, dramatic contrast.

Lighting Considerations

In a well-lit kitchen, Evergreen Fog shows off its soft green tones. In lower-light spaces, it leans grayer and moodier, which can add a cozy vibe.

Either way, it adapts beautifully—it just shifts personality.

Bathroom

Want that spa-like bathroom without going all white? Evergreen Fog on the walls or vanity paired with warm beige or crisp white tile is soothing and sophisticated.

The color has that earthy, nature-inspired vibe that mimics the feeling of a wellness retreat. Imagine stepping into a hot bath surrounded by walls in this soft, grounding green—it’s an instant mood reset.

Evergreen Fog pairs beautifully with neutral tiles (white, gray, beige) and adds warmth against cooler stone finishes. A white subway tile backsplash with Evergreen Fog walls is a timeless combo.

Matte black or brass fixtures pop against the muted backdrop, adding a modern edge. Brushed nickel also works if you want a softer, more understated look.

Add a few eucalyptus branches, and you’ll feel like you’re at a high-end retreat.

Bedrooms

Perfect for creating a calm, restful space. This soft gray-green strikes a perfect balance: it’s soothing enough to calm your mind after a long day but has just enough depth and character to keep the space from feeling bland.

Styling Evergreen Fog in the Bedroom

  • Bedding Ideas: Flannel or linen bedding in whites or muted patterns makes Evergreen Fog walls pop without being overwhelming. Add a chunky knit throw or a faux fur pillow for that extra-cozy vibe.
  • Pair with Warm Neutrals: Creamy whites, sandy beiges, and warm taupes on bedding and curtains highlight Evergreen Fog’s earthy side.
  • Bring in Natural Textures: Think woven baskets, wood nightstands, or a rattan headboard. These details make the room feel layered and cozy.
  • Metallic Accents: Brass lamps or matte black hardware give a polished, modern edge.

Feature or Full Room?

  • Accent Wall: If you’re nervous about painting the whole room, try Evergreen Fog on the wall behind your bed. It frames your headboard beautifully and acts like a natural focal point.
  • Full Room: Go all in! With its medium depth and soft undertones, Evergreen Fog works beautifully on all four walls, especially if paired with light trim and warm, layered bedding.

Dining Room

Evergreen Fog is a fantastic choice here because it strikes the perfect balance between elegant and relaxed. It gives your dining space a sense of occasion without making it feel stuffy or formal.

Wooden dining tables, especially oak, walnut, or reclaimed finishes, look amazing against Evergreen Fog walls. If you prefer painted furniture, crisp white or matte black chairs pop beautifully.

Try creamy white trim (like Sherwin-Williams Alabaster) to brighten things up, or go bold with a darker trim for a dramatic vibe. Add chandeliers in brass, black, or woven natural textures, and consider adding an oversized mirror.

Hallway

Hallways don’t always get the design love they deserve. They’re the connectors of your home, but too often they’re left plain white and a little boring.

Because Evergreen Fog is muted and balanced, it works beautifully in transitional areas like hallways. It adds just enough color to make the space feel intentional, without overwhelming what’s often a narrower or lower-light area.

Styling Evergreen Fog in the Hallway

  • Trim & Doors: Pair with crisp white trim for a classic look, or go bold with black or deep charcoal doors for contrast.
  • Lighting: Add warm sconces or pendant lights to highlight Evergreen Fog’s richness and prevent the space from feeling too dark.
  • Decor Accents: Simple gallery walls, woven runners, or wood console tables pop against the gray-green backdrop.
  • Flooring Pairings: Evergreen Fog looks especially nice against warm wood floors or neutral tile—it brings out their natural tones.

Home Office or Study

If there’s one place where paint color can really set the mood, it’s your home office or study. You want a space that feels calm enough to keep you focused but warm enough that you actually want to spend time in there. That’s where Evergreen Fog shines.

Because it’s a muted gray-green, Evergreen Fog creates a grounded, soothing backdrop that’s perfect for productivity. It’s not as stark as white, which can sometimes feel cold or uninspiring, and it’s not as bold as a dark navy or black, which might make a smaller office feel heavy.

Pair it with natural wood, like a walnut desk or oak bookshelves, layer in textures such as cozy area rugs, linen curtains and leather chairs to help balance out the soft green walls.

Finally, add plants. Since it already has that earthy vibe, greenery feels right at home and gives your workspace a fresh, lively energy.

Colors That Play Beautifully

Evergreen Fog is versatile, but here are some color combos that really shine:

  • Whites: SW Alabaster, Pure White, or Benjamin Moore White Dove.
  • Neutrals: Greiges like SW Accessible Beige or Agreeable Gray.
  • Darker Accents: Charcoal shades like SW Iron Ore or Black Fox for drama.
  • Warm Woods: Natural oak, walnut, or rustic finishes pair beautifully with its earthy tones.
evergreen fog palette

This palette is all about showing how versatile Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog can be when paired with complementary shades. It mixes neutrals, earth tones, and a pop of blue to give you lots of flexibility.

  • High Reflective White: A crisp, bright white that adds contrast. Perfect for trim, ceilings, or cabinetry when you want Evergreen Fog walls to pop. It also works on doors or built-ins for a clean, modern look.
  • Shoji White: A softer, warm off-white with a hint of beige. Great for walls in spaces where you want a lighter, more neutral backdrop, with Evergreen Fog used as an accent (like on doors, cabinetry, or furniture).
  • Liveable Green: A light, fresh green that leans softer and brighter than Evergreen Fog. Works beautifully in adjoining rooms to create flow—like using Evergreen Fog in a living room and Liveable Green in a connected dining area.
  • Windy Blue: This brings in a cool, airy contrast. It’s soft enough not to clash but distinct enough to stand out. Perfect for bedrooms or bathrooms as an accent color. It also pairs beautifully with Evergreen Fog in coastal or modern farmhouse interiors.
  • Quiver Tan: An earthy, grounding taupe with brown undertones. Excellent for furniture, accent walls, or adjoining spaces where you want warmth. It balances the green in Evergreen Fog while still keeping things organic and neutral.

Warm and Organic Color Palette

Warm, Organic Evergreen Fog

This palette is a really thoughtful one built around Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog, and it’s designed to create a warm, organic, and cohesive look.

Color Breakdown:

  • Shoji White: This is a soft, warm white with a touch of beige undertone. Use it on trim, ceilings, or cabinetry for contrast against Evergreen Fog walls.
  • Accessible Beige: A warm, versatile greige (beige + gray). It’s neutral but adds a little more depth than white. Great for living room or bedroom walls paired with Evergreen Fog accents (like furniture, curtains, or cabinetry).
  • Woven Wicker: This warm, medium brown feels natural and earthy—almost like sunbaked clay. Perfect for furniture (like a sideboard or built-ins), accent walls, or woven accessories (rugs, baskets, or picture frames that echo this tone).
  • Bakelite Gold: A bold, golden amber with vintage warmth. This is the pop of energy in the palette. Use it in accent pieces—throw pillows, vases, artwork, or a statement chair. It adds life to the more muted, earthy colors.
  • Über Umber: A deep, rich brown that grounds the palette and adds contrast. Use sparingly, like on interior doors, a dramatic accent wall, or furniture (like a dining table or bookcase). It adds depth and sophistication.
  • Urbane Bronze: A dark charcoal-brown with a hint of warmth. This is your dramatic anchor shade. Fantastic for doors, window frames, hardware, or even cabinetry if you want a bold, moody look. It’s also stunning on a fireplace surround or accent wall.
pink and evergreen fog

This is such a beautiful palette! It pairs Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog with soft pinks, grounding neutrals, and deeper greens to create a balanced, earthy-yet-elegant vibe.

  • Pure White: A crisp, clean white that adds contrast and brightness. Perfect for trim, ceilings, doors, or cabinetry. It makes Evergreen Fog stand out while keeping the overall look fresh.
  • Abalone Shell: A soft, muted blush pink with a hint of gray. It feels sophisticated rather than “girly.” Use it in accent walls in bedrooms or dining rooms, throw pillows, or upholstery. It pairs beautifully with Evergreen Fog for a modern, earthy-romantic look.
  • Neutral Ground: A light, warm beige that acts as a grounding neutral. Great for walls in adjoining rooms (like hallways or open-plan living areas) to balance out bolder colors. Also lovely for larger spaces where you want warmth without color overload.
  • Basil: A deeper, more traditional green that adds richness and contrast. Accent cabinets, kitchen islands, doors, or statement walls. It grounds the palette and pairs beautifully with both pinks and whites.
  • Austere Gray: A soft, silvery gray-green that feels airy and muted compared to Evergreen Fog. Perfect for secondary walls, small spaces like bathrooms, or even ceilings if you want a whisper of color. It helps create tonal variation without leaving the green family.
  • Sandbank: A dusty, earthy pink with warmth. Richer than Abalone Shell, it makes more of a statement. Use it in accent furniture (like a painted dresser or side table), upholstered chairs, rugs, or feature walls. It adds personality and plays beautifully with Evergreen Fog and Basil.

Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog Exteriors

evergreen fog siding

Evergreen Fog works beautifully on front doors (especially against brick or neutral siding) and as an exterior body color when paired with lighter trim. It’s not flashy like a bright red or electric blue door, but it still has presence.

It whispers “come on in” rather than shouting it, which makes it a fantastic choice for homeowners who want curb appeal without going over the top.

Just make sure it complements your roof and stone colors, it can clash with certain red undertones.

Front Door Pairings

Evergreen Fog looks stunning with neutral siding (like beige, cream, or taupe), crisp white trim, and black hardware. Pair it with a brass door knocker or matte black handle set, and you’ve got instant charm.

If your porch has wood elements, like cedar posts or a stained wood ceiling, Evergreen Fog complements them beautifully by highlighting the natural warmth of wood.

Garage Doors & Shutters

Don’t be afraid to carry the color beyond just the front door. Painting garage doors or shutters in Evergreen Fog can give your whole exterior a cohesive, polished feel.

Whole Exterior

Using Evergreen Fog as the main exterior color is a bit more of a commitment, but it can be absolutely stunning. On siding, it gives homes a grounded, earthy look that still feels modern.

Pair it with creamy white trim (like Sherwin-Williams Alabaster), or go all black, and a natural wood front door for a layered, high-contrast effect.

Things to Keep in Mind Outdoors

  • Natural Light: Evergreen Fog looks lighter and greener in bright sunlight and a bit more muted and gray on cloudy days. It’s a shapeshifter, which can be part of its charm.
  • Roof and Stone Colors: Pay attention to fixed elements like your roof, stonework, or brick. Evergreen Fog can clash with warm, red-toned brick or certain orange stones, so it’s important to sample before committing.
  • Neighborhood Vibe: If you live in an area with lots of neutrals, Evergreen Fog offers just enough personality to stand out without breaking HOA rules or looking out of place.

Exterior Use & Weather Exposure

If you use Evergreen Fog on exterior walls or elements (doors, siding, trim), its performance depends heavily on surface prep, paint quality (exterior grade), and exposure (sun, rain, humidity).

In moderately exposed areas, Evergreen Fog holds up decently when topcoated with protective finishes. But in harsh climates, intense sun, moisture, freezing cycles, you’ll want to choose a durable exterior paint variant, proper priming, and periodic maintenance to prevent fading, chalking, or damage.

Over time, lighter or brighter areas might show more wear, but overall, the hue is forgiving compared to brighter or more saturated greens.

Evergreen Fog vs. Other Popular Greens

Evergreen Fog often gets compared to other popular greens, so let’s talk about how it stacks up against some of the competition.

evergreen fog saybrook sage

Evergreen Fog vs Benjamin Moore Saybrook Sage: Each brings their own personality. Evergreen Fog tends to lean a bit more gray, offering a calming, grounded look that works beautifully in rooms with natural wood tones and crisp whites. Saybrook Sage, on the other hand, is a little lighter and greener—thanks to a higher reflectance value—so in lower-light rooms it holds onto its green quality a bit more.

Evergreen Fog vs Clary Sage: When you put Evergreen Fog and Clary Sage side by side, you’ll see two lovely sage-green shades—but they bring slightly different moods to a room. Clary Sage leans a touch warmer (thanks to a hint of yellow in its undertones) and often appears more “green” and garden-fresh, especially in natural light.

Meanwhile, Evergreen Fog sits a little more on the gray side of green, giving it a softer, more muted presence that’s easier to harmonize with other colors (whites, woods, metals).

In brighter rooms, Clary Sage’s warmth shines; in low-light or cooler spaces, Evergreen Fog’s neutrality helps it stay both elegant and calming.

evergreen fog vs coastal plain

Evergreen Fog vs Coastal Plain: Coastal Plain is lighter and a bit fresher, with subtle blue-gray undertones that make it feel brighter and more uplifting—perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, or even front doors where you want a pop of gentle color. Evergreen Fog leans calm and moody, while Coastal Plain feels airy and cheerful.

Evergreen Fog vs Arctic Shadows: Arctic Shadows is a bit lighter and reads more airy, though it still retains a green undertone in many spaces. In a well-lit room, Arctic Shadows may appear fresher and brighter, while Evergreen Fog will show more of its green-gray depth.

But in lower light, Evergreen Fog may feel more moody and cozy, whereas Arctic Shadows may drift toward a cooler gray. Ultimately, if you want something that quietly anchors a room with a soft green cast, Evergreen Fog might be your pick; if you prefer a gentler shade that still feels green but with a lighter touch, Arctic Shadows is a strong contender.

Pros and Cons of Evergreen Fog

Pros:

  • Flexible for interiors and exteriors.
  • Balanced green that works in many lighting conditions.
  • Stylish without feeling trendy.
  • Looks amazing with wood tones.

Cons:

  • In dark rooms, it can look a little muddy or more gray than green.
  • Doesn’t always play well with yellow or orange wood trims.
  • Not the best if you want a bold, statement green—it’s more subtle.

Tips for Using Evergreen Fog Successfully

  1. Test It First – Like all paint colors, Evergreen Fog changes with lighting. Order a peel-and-stick sample and try it on a few walls.
  2. Think About Your Trim – Crisp whites are a safe bet, but watch out for creamy or yellowed whites, which can clash.
  3. Add Texture – Since Evergreen Fog is subtle, layer in cozy textures like velvet, linen, wood, or woven baskets to keep things interesting.
  4. Mix With Metals – Brass, matte black, and even brushed nickel hardware all pair beautifully with this shade.

Real-World Performance & Durability of Evergreen Fog

When it comes to choosing a paint color for your home, the beauty of the hue is only half the story. What really matters is how the color holds up in everyday life—light, wear, cleaning, aging, and more.

Evergreen Fog is one of those colors that tends to fare quite well in real homes, but like any paint, it has strengths and things to watch out for. Let’s dig into how it performs in real-world conditions.

Color Stability Over Time

Because Evergreen Fog is muted and contains gray undertones, it’s less prone to the kind of “fading disaster” you sometimes see with brighter or more saturated greens. The muted, mid-toned nature helps it age gracefully.

Resistance to Stains & Cleaning

On interior walls, Evergreen Fog does a solid job concealing minor scuffs, fingerprints, or dust compared to very light or pure white walls. The slight gray in it helps mask imperfections.

Of course, the performance also depends on the paint finish (eg. eggshell, satin, semi-gloss) and the quality of the paint (brand, number of coats, proper prep).

Wear and Tear in High-Traffic Areas

In hallways, entryways, or rooms where furniture or hands brush against walls a lot, Evergreen Fog holds up better than very pale colors. The medium depth means you have a bit of buffer before scuffs and marks become very visible.

If damage does appear, matching the color for touch-ups is fairly straightforward (assuming you have your paint code or small leftover cans)—Evergreen Fog is not so bold that you’ll immediately see a mismatch.

The Verdict: Is Evergreen Fog Right for Your Home?

Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog isn’t just a paint color, it’s a vibe. Calm, balanced, and versatile, it has just enough green to feel fresh and modern but enough gray to act like a neutral.

Whether you’re painting your kitchen cabinets, refreshing your living room, or choosing a front door color that feels welcoming and stylish, Evergreen Fog is one of those shades that delivers every time.

So if you’ve been craving a soft, grounded color that works just about anywhere, give Evergreen Fog a try. It might just become your new favorite neutral-with-a-twist.
