The Under-Sink Upgrade Most Homeowners Overlook During a Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen renovations have a way of consuming every decision except the right ones.
Weeks go into cabinet finishes and countertop samples. The faucet gets swapped twice. Then the plumber shows up, the sink goes in, and the space under the cabinet gets filled with cleaning products and forgotten.
For homeowners who have been through a renovation, the under-sink cabinet tends to show up on the list of things they wish they had thought about more carefully. Not because it is complicated. Because it is the one area where a small amount of planning during construction saves years of frustration afterward.

The decision most consistently overlooked in that space is water filtration.
Why Renovation Is the Right Time

Installing an under-sink filter after the kitchen is finished is not impossible. It is just messier than it needs to be.
Cabinet interiors get scuffed. Existing pipe runs may not leave room for a filter housing. A faucet hole has to be drilled into a newly installed countertop.
During a renovation, none of that is an issue. The cabinet is open, the plumber is already on site, and the countertop has not been set yet. Adding filtration at that stage costs a fraction of what it costs to retrofit later.
The conversation with a contractor takes about ten minutes. The decision to skip it tends to resurface every time someone buys a case of bottled water or notices the tap water tastes off.
What Under-Sink Filtration Actually Does

The options range from a basic carbon cartridge to a full reverse osmosis system, and the marketing language around all of them makes meaningful comparisons difficult.
The short version:
- A basic carbon filter improves taste and reduces chlorine
- A reverse osmosis system goes considerably further, removing dissolved salts, heavy metals, and disinfection byproducts that carbon filtration alone does not address
Testing reviewed by Quality Water Lab, which publishes independent lab results across a range of residential under-sink cabinet systems, found that quality RO systems reduced lead, chlorine byproducts, and dissolved solids to non-detect levels in residential kitchen installs.
That is a meaningful performance difference from a standard carbon cartridge. A basic water test before selecting a system tells you whether a simpler filter is sufficient or whether your water justifies something more capable.
The Space Question

The most common objection to under-sink filters are cabinet space. It is a fair one.
A traditional tank-based RO system takes up a significant portion of the under-sink cabinet. Add a disposal, a pull-out organizer, and cleaning supplies, and the math gets tight.
Compact tankless systems have changed this considerably. Modern tankless RO units mount flat against the cabinet wall and occupy a fraction of the space that tank systems require. They do need a power outlet under the sink, which is worth confirming with an electrician during the renovation phase.
For cabinets where space is genuinely limited, a non-RO inline filter offers meaningful filtration without the footprint. The tradeoff is reduced contaminant coverage, but for water sources with lower contamination profiles, it can be a practical fit.
The Faucet Detail

Most under-sink systems, and all RO systems, require a dedicated faucet separate from the main kitchen faucet.
This is the detail that catches homeowners off guard most often during a post-renovation install. It requires an additional hole in the countertop or sink deck, which is simple to spec during fabrication and awkward to add afterward.
During a renovation, it is a non-issue. A second faucet hole gets specified before the countertop is cut. The filtration faucet gets selected alongside the primary faucet so the finishes coordinate.
Filtration faucets come in matte black, brushed nickel, brushed brass, and polished chrome. Matching the finish to the primary faucet is a small detail that makes the sink area read as intentional rather than assembled in stages.
What to Ask Before the Plumber Leaves

For homeowners currently in a renovation or planning one, these are the questions worth raising before the under-sink rough-in is finished:
- Is there a dedicated outlet under the sink, or can one be added before drywall closes? Most tankless systems require one.
- Is there room for a second faucet hole in the countertop layout? If the countertop is being fabricated, this is the time to specify it.
- Where will the drain line connect if an RO system is installed? The connection point is simple to add during rough-in and awkward to add later.
- Has the cold water supply line been roughed in with a tee or valve that allows a filter to be added inline? Worth confirming before the plumber moves on.
None of these questions requires a significant change to the renovation scope. They take a few minutes to raise and potentially years to wish you had.
The Bottled Water Calculation

A household buying two cases of bottled water a week spends between $400 and $700 a year on water alone.
The ongoing filter cost for most under-sink systems runs between $80 and $200 annually, depending on the system type. The math tends to favor filtration within the first year.
The more interesting question is what that bottled water habit actually delivers in terms of water quality. Bottled water is not subject to the same testing and reporting requirements as municipal tap water, and independent testing has repeatedly found significant variation between brands and batches.
A certified under-sink system with published lab results offers more verifiable performance than most bottled water alternatives, at a fraction of the long-term cost.
A Detail Worth Planning For
Under-sink filtration does not change how a kitchen looks. It does not show up in before and after photos.
It is the kind of detail that gets noticed in daily use rather than on reveal day, which is probably why it gets skipped so often during planning.
The homeowners most satisfied with their renovations tend to be the ones who gave the functional details the same attention as the aesthetic ones.
The cabinet opens smoothly. The lighting that works for cooking and for dinner parties. The water tastes clean without a trip to the grocery store.
That last one is worth five minutes of planning time before the plumber moves on to the next job.
